SUMMARY: Matt Trousdale Lessons
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
We'll record next week - set up the mic before the
lesson.\n Today we talked about making songs more
interesting, with some variation in chord voicing on
the guitar, and adding solos and scales to the song to
help. I suggested he work on scales to start, maybe the
first being G. Working on starting and ending in varied
  places, try the 1 3 2 4 3 5 4 6 5 7 6 8 pattern up and
down.\n Eventually this should help develop an ear
for the relationship between notes and a sense of what
note is likely to come next when figuring out a
  melody.\n

SUMMARY: Matt Trousdale Lessons
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
We started off listening to Matt's recording from last
week, and talked about arrangement decisions that might
it seem less repetitive. \n I looped the chorus and he
tried to work out some piano licks to put in the vocal
rest places (beats 3 and 4 in the chorus).\n We also
tried recording a bit of bass, and talked about how to
mute strings you're not playing, and the "Nashville"
system of finding 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 on the frets.

Today we paused the recording, and Matt went to another
song, "Alabama" by Cross Canadian Ragweed. This has
some interesting strumming syncopation which we worked

DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
We started off working through some scales, first open
G at the bottom of the neck, then using the "home row"
scale that I favour. \n We worked through where the
half steps are, and how 4 is added above 3 and 7 is
added below 8 -- or 1 -- in the pentatonic frame of
reference.\n We then looked at Box #10 and sang
through it a bit, and then another song in B-- which I
showed Matt how he could play the scale along with
  those chords.

DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
We talked mostly about theory today for chord names,
  like add9 vs 9, and 11 and 13 chords.\n We also
covered 7 chords (dominant sevenths) and major 7 chords
(a half step down from the root).\n Also, the context
of naming based on the chord, not the key. So in the
key of C, an F major seven would have an E in it, not a
B (B being the seventh note of the C scale, and E being
the seventh note of the F chord within the C scale).

SUMMARY: Matt Trousdale Lessons
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:
Last Lesson: Last Lesson: Last Lesson: Last Lesson: Last Lesson: Last Lesson: Last Lesson: Last Lesson: Last Lesson: We talked mostly about theory today for chord names,
  like add9 vs 9, and 11 and 13 chords.\n We also
covered 7 chords (dominant sevenths) and major 7 chords
(a half step down from the root).\n Also, the context
of naming based on the chord, not the key. So in the
key of C, an F major seven would have an E in it, not a
B (B being the seventh note of the C scale, and E being
the seventh note of the F chord within the C scale).
